Downhill Skiing
Italy is famous for having clusters of ski resorts, all within easy acces of one another - either by car, or by public transport. Whilst many of these are well known in northern Italy, the facilities further south are one of Italy's secrets that the Italians would like to keep to themselves. Like many of their cousins further north, in Europe, most Abruzzo skiing resorts are not spectacularly high, with year-round skiing. The skiing season usually starts mid-December and ends around mid-April (although this is often linked to the end of Easter). The skiing conditions can vary. 2004/5 was spectacular. 2005/6 was good. 2006/7 (like most of Europe and the north eastern side of north America and Canada) was very poor! 2007/8, again like most of Europe, varied enormously throughout the season. Conditions started spectacularly early & ended spectacularly late, with some wonderful conditions in-between, as well as some variable conditions at times.

A good introduction to skiing in the region can be found at: Guardian Newspaper Article
More detailed information about conditions in the area can be found at:
Skiinfo.com provides an extensive list and their details. Follow the links to the Abruzzo ski resorts.
We have found the following skiing areas in Abruzzo. There may be others! Piste maps are available at the base stations, on the pistes. Base stations sell lift passes for that particular skiing area. Some sell passes for linked skiing areas too. (Never forget to bring along a couple of passport sized photos!) Most ski areas have ski lessons. We know people who just turned up at Roccaraso for ski lessons & were skiing with an English speaking instructor by mid-morning. Most ski areas have ski and boot hire. We have tried hiring at Roccaraso and the equipment was excelent, as was the advice given.
Unfortunately we do not know the website addresses of all the ski areas but we are sure that they are easily searchable for.

Ski Mountaineering & Cross-Country Skiing
There are numerous routes in the mountains. There is a very good book giving local routes, times, levels of exertions, etc. We will try to buy it when we find it again.
